"doing winter" 做冬

12/22/2011 is winter solstice 冬至 (the shortest day and longest night of the year). In Chinese tradition, we consider this day the beginning of the first year, because after this day, the days get longer and longer.

We celebrate this night with our closest family with good food and we end the dinner with 湯圓 (Round Sweet dumplings, usually have peanut or black sesame paste in them. The round shape symbolize a full cycle of the year).

“The way to dissolve our resistance to life is to meet it face-to-face…
…when we want to complain about the rain, we could feel its wetness instead. When we worry because the wind is shaking our windows, we could meet the wind and hear its sound. Cutting expectations for a cure is a gift we can give ourselves.”

Tofu mama

We came across a home-made tofu joint on Lamma Island. There’s no menu, upon entering this makeshift pit-stop on the jungle path we were asked “Hot or cold?” David & I got cold and Andrea got hot. >Silky soft sweet bowl of goodness with a hint of ginger<

lamma island pt 2

After exploring the village/landing zone of Yung Shue Wan (榕樹灣) we got lost and then found the walking path to begin our hike to the other side of the island, destination- Sok Kwu Wan (索罟灣). It was a 3 hour long hike. Not too long after leaving familiar sounds of construction and village life behind the path grew more into jungle than neighborhood, abandoned houses and caved roof tops mingling with the vines. The textures and layers peeling back on them clearly telling a story of age and change. A mini destination along this trail is a small beach-like zone and ‘the only organic herb farm in Hong Kong’. While fulfilling our share of beach-ing and herb-sipping we met a cool family from Holland doing the same. Joining forces for the remainder of the journey we happily managed to miss the scheduled boat back home, resulting in feast of fish and drinks on the pier!

lamma island pt.1

After a couple weeks of hectic city living, Andrea and I decided to take a day off, and lay low off the grid. We met up with our friend David (a New York based fashion designer) and headed to Lamma Island (南丫島).

Lamma Island is located to the southwest of Hong Kong Island, it has an estimated population of 6,000 and 10 villages on the island. Lamma was named after the shape of the island which looks like the fork of a tree.

After a 30mins ferry ride, we’ve arrived Yung Shue Wan (榕樹灣). This village is a mix of residential properties, shops and restaurants. Yung Shue Wan gives a Mediterranean feeling when walking through it, with a progressive community invested in organic and off the grid living.

ANT COLONY
We live in the colony just below the hot pink glowy rectangle (far left near bottom). There are plans to fill in the bay with landfill so we don’t need to take all those unnecessary magical boat rides anymore. Seriously??

detour part 2

The idea of living green and being aware of your carbon footprint is still a new idea here, but events like these show that progress are being made.

detour part 1

This month is design month in Hong Kong. Andrea and I went to the annual design exhibition named Detour which occupied the Former Police Married Quarters every year. The venue is quite interesting, the building is remained in its abandon state with peeling paints and broken window.

The theme of this year’s exhibition is Use-Less. Dedicated to highlighting the impacts of irresponsible consumerism, brings together local designers, creative concepts and workshops that stimulate conversation and inspires eco-living.

Our good friend Jake was in town this weekend, we went to 蘭桂坊 (Lan Kwai Fong) for a few drinks.

Lan Kwai Fong is a small square of streets in Central, Hong Kong. The area was dedicated to hawkers before the Second World War, but underwent a renaissance in the mid 1980s. It is now a popular expatriate haunt in Hong Kong for drinking, clubbing and dining.
